ah - I built another pair and can't house them all or make a Tannoy GRF 5.1 system (the idea had crossed my mind though...)

Alex a chap who had early HPD's in Berkeley cabs was the first one to audition and 'fall' for my cabs - he uses a 300b amp. He's recently done some tube rolling. He's had the HPD's in the cabs for 9 or 10 months - still loves the GRF sound.
For a 'compact' speaker they do seem to get a lot out of the drivers.

I've had 15" Golds and HPD's in my cabs and the Golds are a little different with even more emotion and perhaps even vigour the HPD's are a little more controlled and refined which helps on fast complex / challenging music.

It's horses for courses and both are very good over all and to me extraordinary speakers. I listen to a wide range of music so somewhere in the middle is important.
When the expense of my extension and furnishing is over I will try to get some Golds to live with for a while and really decide.

I also fancy a crossover build project just to see...

Last night I took out the optional extra damping panel down the inner vertical rear panel - I had put this in as I found I needed a little less bass in my previous room. In y new room I am loving the extra oomph afforded by running them without - I had velco' the felt in for just this purpose with the new room in mind but wanted to use them for a couple of weeks before fiddling. The adjsutable treble energy levels on crossovers are also very useful for this type of test / move...

    Hi Steve,

Just *DO* it, mate - you will not regret it. The Golds positively come alive when the piss-poor (by modern standards) original crossovers are binned and replaced with ones using the best modern components available.

Don't skip on the quality of caps, inductors or resistors used either, as the drive units are simply superb and really reward money spent in that area, and also on the internal wiring. Use the absolute best you can afford!

    Patrick,

To answer your question, my advice would be to go for some of the earlier Tannoy drive units, which were even more efficient and voiced to match valve amps, such as 15" Monitor Silvers or Reds, and put them into GRF or Autograph cabinets (preferably high quality modern replicas, as they would be more rigid, which is where Steve comes in! ) - Reds or Silvers ain't cheap, though!

But if you want the best.....

    Marco.
