You lose the TIDAL GUI too, which I didn't like. You have to play via Bubble uPnP as far as I remember.

I really think the best way is a dedicated laptop and a USB to SPDIF converter for Tom. Using things like uPnP apps and interfacing with an R-Pi probably isn't what Tom wants to get involved with. Tom just pick up a USB to SPDIF converter off ebay and find a PC or use your MacBook provided you can find a driver for the converter and a version of TIDAL that will run on it. Try and download TIDAL onto it to see if it at least runs?

At least just to try it that would be the easiest option. Spend more later if smitten.

What would be the best device to stream Tidal from that would provide SPDIF to my DAC? Is there an option from RPi? (as I have one of those). I have a spare Macbook kicking around that could be pressed into service if necessary, but I'm probably happiest with a widget of some kind ... the ideal would be a device controlled by my iPhone/iPad as well as a web browser.
Pity you don't not have an android device as Bubble uPnP can control Tidal and your Pi using either of the softwares will work fine.

Don't think there is a an app that can send Tidal to the Pi on iOS.

Unless you use a Roon Ready software install on the Pi and buy Roon which uses Tidal as its streaming service.

If you already have a MacBook I'd just use that to send Tidal music to your DAC via usb, that should at least give you an idea as to whether to go the whole hog.

I'm sending usb 10 meters on a cable from laptop to my dac, and its fine. repeater cables are not expensive. might be an option.

“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. It is easy for the weak to be gentle. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power. This is the supreme test. It is the glory of Lincoln that, having almost absolute power, he never abused it, except on the side of mercy".

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear. They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home -- all the more powerful because forbidden -- terrify them. A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

"You don't have free will. You have the appearance of free will.”

“There's a war out there, old friend. A world war. And it's not about who's got the most bullets. It's about who controls the information. What we see and hear, how we work, what we think... it's all about the information!”

    Tom,
Buy Roon, can be run on a mac.
Its an endgame product and does exactly what you need.

RE: Tidal, best UI experience accessing Tidal I've seen is via Roon.
The Developers have thought in advance all the things you might want to browse your music by, seriously....what you wish they have already thought of!
